# Authentication

> One API key authenticates the REST API and the MCP server. Send it as a Bearer token.

## Create a key

Open **API** in the app and click **Create key**. Keys start `wtpa_live_` and are shown once. You can create several, rotate them, and revoke any of them at any time.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Keep keys on your server. Anyone with a key can spend your credits. If one is exposed, revoke it in the app and create a new one.

## Send the key

Send it in the `Authorization` header on every request.

```bash Request theme={null}
curl https://app.willthispersonanswer.com/api/v1/requests \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $WTPA_API_KEY"
```

## Responses

* Requests and responses are JSON. Send `Content-Type: application/json` with a body.
* Every success carries an `X-Request-Id` header. It is the id you use to read or delete the request later.
* A missing, wrong or revoked key returns `401 invalid_api_key`.

## Retry safely

Send an `Idempotency-Key` header with a value of your choice. If the same request arrives twice, you are charged once and get the first answer back. The same key with different content returns `409 idempotency_key_reused`.

## MCP

Most AI tools sign in with your Will This Person Answer account, so no key is needed. A client that cannot sign in sends the same key as an `Authorization: Bearer` header. See [Connect your AI tool](https://docs.willthispersonanswer.com/mcp/connect.md).
